How to Buy a Suppressor in North Carolina

Buying your first suppressor does not have to feel confusing. Drew helps customers through the process step by step, from choosing the right suppressor to completing the Silencer Shop and ATF submission steps.

A lot of people around Marion, McDowell County, and western North Carolina put off buying a suppressor because they assume the process is complicated, stressful, or full of paperwork problems.

The truth is that most of the anxiety comes from not knowing what to expect.

At Foothills Firearm Factory, Drew personally helps customers through the suppressor buying process. You are not handed forms and told “good luck.” If questions come up or something needs to be corrected, he helps you work through it.

In-Store Guidance

Drew helps you choose the right suppressor for your firearm and walks you through the steps instead of leaving you to figure it out alone.

Silencer Shop Kiosk

The in-store kiosk helps capture fingerprints and required information for NFA submissions, which can make future purchases easier.

Straight Pricing

Drew is upfront about money. No surprise transfer fees. No hidden add-ons appearing later in the process.

01

Choose the Right Suppressor for Your Firearm

Some customers already know exactly what suppressor they want. Others want help figuring out what fits their firearm and intended use.

Drew can help you match the suppressor to your firearm, compare models, understand mounting options, and choose what makes sense for your goals and budget.

If the suppressor is not already in stock, it can usually be ordered through the shop. Once purchased, the suppressor remains securely held by the FFL until ATF approval is completed.

02

Understand the NFA Transfer and Tax Stamp Process

Suppressors are regulated under the National Firearms Act, so the transfer requires ATF approval before you can take the suppressor home.

The exact tax stamp requirements and submission details can change, so Drew will explain the current process before you buy. The important thing is simple: you do not take the suppressor home until the ATF approval is complete.

This page is a plain-English overview, not legal advice. Drew will walk you through the current purchase and submission steps at the shop.

Fingerprints, Photo, and ATF Submission

Foothills Firearm Factory has a Silencer Shop kiosk in-store to help simplify the suppressor paperwork process.

This is where fingerprints and required information are captured and prepared for the ATF eForms process. Drew also helps customers complete the required photo and account setup steps.

If this is your first suppressor purchase, you will typically need a Silencer Shop account and an ATF eForms account. The first purchase usually takes the most setup because your information is being entered correctly for the first time.

The good news is that future suppressor purchases are often much easier because much of your information is already stored and reusable.

04

Individual Ownership or Suppressor Trust?

During the process, you can choose individual ownership or a suppressor trust.

A suppressor trust can make it easier to transfer ownership later, add authorized users, or simplify estate planning.

If you are unsure which option makes the most sense for you, Drew can explain the differences in plain English without overwhelming jargon.

05

Wait for ATF Approval

ATF approval times vary and are completely controlled by the ATF background check and approval process.

Years ago, suppressor approvals could take a year or longer. Recently, many approvals have become significantly faster, but no dealer can promise a specific approval date.

Some buyers receive approval in weeks. Others wait longer. Repeat purchasers may move through the process faster because their information is already established in the system.

During the waiting period, your suppressor stays securely held at the shop until approval is complete.

06

Approval and Pickup

Once approved, the ATF sends notification that the suppressor transfer process is complete.

Drew will typically contact you when everything is ready so you can return to the shop and pick up your suppressor.

At that point, the process is complete and you can finally take it home.

07

What If There Is a Problem With the Application?

Most paperwork issues can be corrected.

If the ATF needs additional information or identifies a problem with the submission, customers are usually notified about what needs to be fixed or updated.

This is another reason many customers prefer working with a local suppressor dealer who is willing to help walk through the process instead of disappearing once paperwork becomes frustrating.

First Time Buying a Suppressor?

That is completely normal. Most first-time suppressor buyers have questions about fingerprints, trusts, wait times, ATF paperwork, eForms accounts, and what happens next.

Foothills Firearm Factory helps make the suppressor buying process understandable, manageable, and straightforward from start to finish.

Stop by the shop or contact Drew directly. He will help you understand the process and get pointed in the right direction without pressure or confusion.
