NC Concealed Handgun Permit Help

Concealed Carry in North Carolina

Getting your North Carolina concealed carry permit does not have to feel confusing. Drew helps customers understand the class, the county Sheriff process, fingerprinting, paperwork, and what to expect after you apply.

A lot of people around Marion, McDowell County, and western North Carolina want to carry responsibly, but they are not sure where to start.

The process is not handled by the gun shop. In North Carolina, concealed handgun permits are issued through the Sheriff’s Office in your county of residence.

Foothills Firearm Factory helps you understand the steps, choose the right firearm, and connect with the right concealed carry class so you are not guessing your way through the process.

Take an Approved North Carolina Concealed Carry Class

Before you apply for a North Carolina concealed handgun permit, you need to complete an approved concealed carry class.

The class usually covers North Carolina carry laws, safe handling, storage, when you can and cannot carry, and basic shooting qualification.

At the end of the class, you receive a certificate of completion. You will submit that certificate as part of your application with the Sheriff’s Office, so it is smart to keep a copy for your own records.

02

Apply Through Your County Sheriff’s Office

After completing the class, you apply through the Sheriff’s Office in the North Carolina county where you live.

The exact process can vary by county. In many counties, you will submit an application, provide identification, pay the permit fee, schedule fingerprinting, and sign the required releases for the background check.

Some counties let you begin the application online. Others require more of the process to happen in person. If you are not sure where to start, Drew can help you find the right county process.

03

Understand Basic Eligibility

North Carolina is a shall-issue state for eligible applicants. That means the permit is issued when the applicant meets the legal requirements and passes the required checks.

In general, applicants must be at least 21, complete the required training, live in the county where they apply, meet residency requirements, and not be prohibited under state or federal law from possessing a firearm.

Disqualifying issues can include certain criminal convictions, active protective orders, mental health prohibitions, or other legal restrictions.

This page is a plain-English overview, not legal advice. If you have any question about eligibility, contact your county Sheriff’s Office or a qualified attorney before applying.

Firearm laws and concealed carry regulations can change. Eligibility and approval decisions are determined by North Carolina law and your local sheriff’s office. Foothills Firearm Factory and course instructors cannot guarantee permit approval.

04

Fingerprinting, Paperwork, and Background Check

Fingerprinting is handled through the Sheriff’s Office or its approved process.

From there, your application goes through the required background check and review. The Sheriff’s Office checks your eligibility and may review local records as part of the process.

This is the part where patience matters. Once the paperwork is submitted, the timing is mostly controlled by the county process and the background check.

05

Wait for Approval

Approval times vary by county. Many applicants see the process take several weeks to a couple of months, but workload and background check timing can change that.

When your permit is ready, the Sheriff’s Office will notify you. Depending on the county, you may pick it up in person or receive instructions directly from the office.

No gun shop can promise a specific approval timeline. The best move is to submit everything correctly the first time and follow the Sheriff’s Office instructions.

Permit processing times vary and are controlled by the sheriff’s office and background check process. Actual approval timelines may differ.

06

Choose the Right Carry Gun

The permit process is only one part of responsible concealed carry. The other part is choosing a firearm you can actually carry, handle, and use safely.

Drew can help you think through size, recoil, grip fit, controls, holster compatibility, and how the handgun feels in your hand.

That guidance matters. A handgun that looks good online may not be the right carry gun for your body, your hand strength, your clothing, or your actual use case.

07

Renewal and Keeping Your Permit Current

North Carolina concealed handgun permits are generally valid for five years unless revoked.

Renewal is usually simpler than the original application, but you should not wait until the last minute. Many Sheriff’s Offices encourage starting the renewal process before the permit expires.

County procedures can vary, so check with your Sheriff’s Office for renewal timing, fees, and whether you need an appointment.

Put the renewal date somewhere you will actually see it. Letting a permit expire can make the process more difficult than renewing on time.

First Time Carrying?

That is completely normal. Most first-time carry customers have questions about the class, the application, the right handgun, holsters, comfort, storage, and what happens after approval.

Concealed carry training is intended to support safe, lawful, and responsible firearm ownership. Students are responsible for understanding and following all applicable laws and regulations.

Foothills Firearm Factory helps make the concealed carry process more understandable from the first question to the first carry setup.
